I recently started a new job, and find myself in a different part of town for lunch. I'm slowly getting a feel for the area and exploring my food options. Simons Cafe is a family owned place that has been around for many years; I had just never gone before. They offer an outdoor patio, a bar and inside dining areas. I decided to eat inside in the dining area. The place is warm and inviting and very clean. I was greeted promptly by the busser and served water. The server was friendly and quick to offer information on the daily specials. The menu features typical cafe comfort foods.
I ordered the French dip sandwich. The sandwich arrived quickly and was served with fries and horseradish sauce. The french roll was soft and gave a nice crunch. The roast beef was very tender and flavorful. Overall, a very good meal. This will be a place in my regular lunch rotation for sure. -

Neighborhood bar / restaurant.
Located on Lakeside on the bottom of Windy, this spot is across the street from Bartley Ranch. Which made it an ideal place for drinks and dinner on a Saturday night before catching the Guys and Dolls performance.
Totally a neighborhood bar, seemed like everyone there was a regular. Our group decided to enjoy the large covered patio. Inside the place is divided into a bar area on the right and restaurant seating to the left. Regular menu and a brief nightly specials menu are available. It's not foo foo food, it basic food for a reasonable price. The French onion soup shouldn't be ignored- plenty of baked cheesy goodness covering great beefy flavor. The main and side salads were all crisp and fresh. Chicken Milanese was tender, but bright yellow. Catfish portion good sized and crispy as well as the fish and chips. A basket of two types of warm bread were complimentary to the table. I don't believe anything on the menu was over$30.
Plenty of easy parking out front in the strip mall's huge lot.
After the show this was ideal for a nightcap.
In the winter I've enjoyed a couple of stiff Irish coffees here. -

In our quest to try something new we discovered Simon's late on a Sunday morning.
We had called to make sure they were open but when we arrived the hours posted said they were closed on Sunday's. There was an open sign in the window but we could not see inside because of the tint on the windows. Someone from inside came to the door and we said we were confused because of the posted hours. They invited us in and there were just a few people seated at the bar. They explained that they are closed on Sunday's except during football season.
When you walk in the bar area is on the right and the dining area was on the left. We decided to have a seat at the bar. We did not see anyone in the dining area. There were a couple of TV's with football games on and the people in the bar were watching them. The interior looked very clean but felt like a throw back to the 80's.
We had a seat at the bar and were provided breakfast menus. I chose the chicken fried steak and my wife chose the chili cheese omelette.
We decided to try our luck on the slot machines which was fun and we listened to a few of the regulars have colorful conversations. The whole experience felt like we were visiting someone's house and had a seat in their living room.
Our food arrived in a timely manner and looked good but not great. The chicken fried steak was on a bed of gravy, no gravy on top. The gravy was good and we were told it is made in house.
The bartender was very nice and took good care us. A few others came in and they were known by name to people already there. We both agreed that this is very much a locals 'cheers' type place. We might be back to check out the rest of menu at some time but this is now currently down further on our list. Had we been in a more outgoing mood, this might have been better. -

Bartenders are polite and attentive. A lot of locals, but for the most part they are friendly ! Have a shot ready for me Randy !
